Online shopping from the e-commerce site is becoming more and more popular to purchase things ---smallest from diapers to largest furniture, electronics or even houses--- everything is available online nowadays with a comfort for the customer to get it at their home step. As online shopping is a godsend for all customers,
similarly it is a gain for the bad guys.
BAD GUYS or the malicious actors are those who tricks
the end user in the fraud and as a result most of the time the user ends up
with a huge loss.
Sweeping around the newspaper, you will daily find at
least one news of online fraud where the victim is tricked against non-existing
thing, and has lost a huge amount of money, in return. Since we are moving to
the new digital world and it becomes very necessary to understand the
environment and act accordingly.
Internet is full of trickery and fraudsters and it is our responsibility to save ourselves from
such bad guys. It is very important to know and follow some safety measures before
going online.
- First thing is to maintain the basic security of the device which you use for the purpose. Ensure that the device has legitimate and updated antivirus solution, firewall, and the firmware along with other software are properly updated and patched. Also, restrict site permissions in the web browser so that no site can do anything without your permission.
- If you are a new user and this is your first experience in the online shopping, then reach out to your family member or trusted friend to get help. Remember, there is no insult in asking for help.
- READ ALL DISCLOUSERS OF THE SHOPPING SITE.
- Never use other’s device or public Wi-Fi for shopping online.
- Always ensure the legitimacy (whether the web site is original or not) of the website. Do review and research about the website along with taking proper notes of the dealer telephone number, address, and other details.
- Always shop for the original site only. Never get into any site that claims to the partner or extension of the original site. There are no sites of that sort.
- Never click on the links that offers huge discounts or any other benefit, received via text message, WhatsApp, or on any other social media. The links can be phishing links which can trick all your details along with the card details and get them to attacker.
- Make sure that the website is running on “https” protocol, including the shopping site and the payment gateway and check for the PADLOCK sign before the URL in the browser address bar. If both present, then it indicates that the site is secure and no other person can see your information.
- Search and compare for the products’ description, price difference in multiple websites to ensure that you are not tricked to any fake product or any fake site.
- For every product, check for the users’ and the vendors’ reviews and Q&A section. It will help you understand between the showcased product and the real product after use. If you find anything missing that is mentioned in the description, prevent purchasing such item.
- Always take a print or a screenshot of the transactions that you make to purchase items. Also, take print of the product’s details, like price, specifications, terms, confirmation receipts, etc. to maintain a record with you.
- Immediate after the transaction, check the cards/net-banking account to know about the charges you paid are same or not; if not, instantly inform to the concerned authority.
- After completing the shopping, clear all web browser cookies and saved passwords, and close the site.
- Beware of e-mails like “please confirm of your payment, purchase and account details of the product.” Never reply to such mails received. The legitimate shopping websites never send these type of mails. Immediately inform to the merchant, if received.
